Greater Copenhagen Light Rail
Copenhagen's new light rail system
Track, catenary system and trains to the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail provided by Aarsleff Rail A/S and the consortium partners Siemens AG and Siemens A/S.
The complete contract for the transport system consists of design, execution and delivery of the track system from the line’s southern terminus Ishøj to the northern end in Lundtofte west of Copenhagen, a total of 28 kilometres of dual track through 8 municipalities. The contract also includes the design, execution and delivery of 29 stations, complete catenary system and the delivery of 27 train sets to carry the 13-14 million passengers expected to use the Greater Copenhagen Light Rail annually.
A complex project with many interfaces
The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail is built in densely populated area and passes through busy traffic arteries. Design and execution is characterized by many interfaces to adjacent projects and the contractors building the civil works part of the project. Many solutions are worked out in cooperation to provide the best design. The same close cooperation is being established with the contractor responsible for the construction of the operation and maintenance centre.
In the design and construction phase, we are paying attention to the hospitals located
close to the light rail track and other stakeholders along the track which we handle in cooperation
with the client. In addition, there are interfaces to owners of cables and sewers, traffic authorities and
the 8 municipalities that the light rail tracks pass through.
Organization and structure
The Greater Copenhagen Light Rail is being built by a consortium consisting of Aarsleff Rail A/S, Siemens AG, Germany and Siemens A/S, Denmark, with COWI as the consortium's consulting engineer. Within the consortium, the areas of responsibility are divided according to each organization's expertise. Siemens is responsible for the design of the complete catenary system and power supply as well as supplying a large part of the equipment, including transformers and all train sets. Aarsleff Rail is responsible for track building, ballasting and alignment, stations as well installation of catenary system and installation work at the supply stations.
